Going Green with Eco-Friendly Packing Materials

Being an online merchant means that you have to send out a lot of packages to your customers in all parts of the country, if not the world. This means a big portion of your operating costs go to purchasing packaging material that your products will be mailed into and that will include the traditional items like bubble wrap which are non-biodegradable and non-recyclable.

There are a lot of advantages to going green. Aside from the fact that you’ll be doing the earth a huge favor and probably be leaving it a much better place for your future offspring, consumers appreciate businesses which care for the environment. Why do you think companies have become more serious with corporate social responsibility? If you’re thinking of green-ing up your business, then here some alternatives that you can use:

Popcorn

Environmentalists do not appreciate bubble wrap so much because of the fact that, although they’re fun to pop, they do not decompose because they are made of plastic and there’s nothing you can do with it once you’ve popped all the bubbles. Popcorn on the other hand is very much degradable, that is if you can resist the urge to just have your stomach digest it. Still affordable and easy to prepare, they do not spoil and can serve as a treat for birds afterwards they’ve done their job of transporting fragile products safely. Just advise your customers to get rid of the popcorn once they’ve received the package and not use it for long term storage because it might attract animals and insects.

Shredded Paper

We all have piles upon piles of useless paper lying around the house. Instead of allowing them to gather dust and take up space, why not come up with a more productive use for them in the form of parcel fillers? All you need is a paper shredded and you have instant bubble wrap substitute. Aside from the fact that you’re spending close to zero on producing it, you’re also helping rid the world of otherwise useless materials.

Mailing Bags

Although they are technically made of synthetic material, mailing bags can still be classified as eco-friendly especially the ones with re-sealable flaps. While paper packaging material would no longer be of use after a package is received and would otherwise be thrown into the trash, mailing bags can be re-used for storing mail items. And because they are less bulky than boxes, they take up less space in homes.
